87 Lancer

In 1987 Shelby decided to venture outside of the pocket rocket venue and make a sport sedan. To do this, he started with a Lancer. He added the first CD player in a production vehicle and offered two different interior options. The powerplant remained the same 175HP engine.

Going along with the sport sedan theme, Shelby used Monroe Formula GP struts and shocks, and larger sway bars. He also seemed to love the Goodyear Gatorbacks, this time using 205/60VR15. These were mounted on black Shelby CSS one-piece cast aluminum with a polished lip. The brakes were upgraded to power, ventilated 10.1"x.94" disks in front and solid 10.6" disks in the back.

On the inside, Shelby went for comfort. The list of standard equipment included all of the following: air conditioning; full-length console with arm rest; overhead console with compass, outside temperature, and courtesy lights; dual illuminated vanity mirrors; full instrumentation (again, no boost gauge); premium insulation; courtesy lights in the ash tray, courtesy map, door courtesy, rear seat courtesy, glove box, cargo, and dome; power mirrors, windows, and door locks; driver's side power seat; rear defrost; split folding rear seat; and tilt steering with signature steering wheel.

Adding to the deluxe interior, Shelby added the first CD player in a production vehicle. He used a 140 watt Pioneer DEX77 AM/FM Stereo CD player with integrated 9-band equalizer and anti-theft coding. It was configured with two amps and 10 speakers. If you are in the market for one of these cars, make sure the sound system is intact, if not, find another car.

The car was available only in Graphic Red. It also had more subdued graphics stating "Shelby" and "Intercooled Turbo." All trim was blacked out and a set of driving lights integrated into the airdam. The production was limited to 800 cars. 400 of these automatics and 400 with a 5-speed. The auto cars had leather seats and the 5-speeds used a woven cloth.

Weighing 3000lbs, the Shelby Lancer could manage about 7.8 from 0-60 with 1/4 mile times of 15.8 seconds. Keep in mind the cars we are using for comparison. This car was not a slouch when all factors are considered.

Total Production: 800. 395 w/automatic and leather, 5 w/automatic and cloth, and 400 with 5 speed and cloth.
